Brighten up, Baby!
As the great Mark Twain once said, “When your friends begin to flatter you on how young you look, it’s a sure sign you’re getting old.” But let’s face it — unless you’re Betty White (girlfriend always seems to be having a good time) — no one looks forward to aging.
Unfortunately, fine lines, sun spots, and pigment changes and are about as unavoidable as paying taxes (and crushing on Clooney, for that matter).
Fortunately, we live in a day and age where anything is possible, even brightening, firming, moisturizing and repairing sun damage — without going under the knife (Jocelyn Wildenstein has scared us enough)! Serums like Clinque Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector and Philosophy Miracle Worker Dark Spot Corrector are all the rage, but are their claims valid? We chatted with Dr. Jessica Wu, Los Angeles dermatologist and author of Feed Your Face, and got the truth behind these little bottles of magic.
Do skin tone correcting serums really work?
Some skin tone correcting serums really do work. They can help brighten and even out your overall skin tone, and can even fade dark spots, whether they’re freckles, acne marks, or sun damage. These creams are more likely to work if you start treating them right away. However, if your brown spots are very dark, or if they’ve been there for a while (typically six months or longer), they may not respond completely, and are likely to require stronger, prescription-strength creams or in-office treatments like laser or chemical peels.
Is there a particular ingredient to look for when selecting a product?
Look for ingredients like Vitamin C (found in the Clinique Even Better and Origins Brighter by Nature products) and soy extract (found in Aveeno Positively Radiant products), which have been shown to slow down the overproduction of melanin. Vitamin C also helps exfoliate your skin. Niacinamide, a form of Vitamin B, has also been shown to brighten and even out skin tone. You can find niacinamide in the Olay Total Effects Tone Correcting line and Philosophy Miracle Worker Dark Spot Corrector.
But remember, Mark Twain also said, “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” So don’t get down — just brighten up, baby!
