Be a Holiday Tourist
If the word “tourist” makes you think of confused strangers with big cameras and even bigger maps, forget all that. We live in the fabulous city of Los Angeles and there are plenty of map-free activities and attractions that you may have been neglecting. The holidays are the perfect time to be a tourist in your own city!
The weather has cooled, twinkling lights illuminate the streets and you need something to keep the out-of-town relatives busy! We’ve got just what you need to get you away from the gift-wrapping table and out experiencing the spirit of this season (don’t worry, there are no Hollywood star tours on our list).
Grinchmas at Universal Studios Hollywood
100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City
Sometimes the thought of a theme park makes us cringe, but deck it out in full Grinchmas decor and we’re there! Where else are you going to find a real life Whoville complete with singing Whos?! And we must admit, we’d put on our tourist gear just to see that gigantic tree with millions of choreographed, pulsing lights.
Holiday Cheer at The Grove
189 The Grove Drive, Fairfax District
Although The Grove has a tendency to be crazy hectic, during the holidays we don’t mind. Between the 100-foot-tall Christmas tree, the magical “snowfall” every night, and handsome holiday decorations, The Grove is the perfect place to be a holiday tourist and get a little shopping done. Hey, it’s not everywhere you can shop outside in December — might as well take advantage of living in Los Angeles!
L.A. Kings Holiday Ice
800 W. Olympic Blvd., Downtown
If you’re like us, you probably don’t make it downtown too often, but the holidays are the perfect time to explore! Journey down to the entertainment mecca L.A. Live to ice skate beneath the city’s skyscrapers and take in the sights and lights of the season. Hang around after and grab a bite to replenish your strength or unwind with a cocktail at one of L.A. Live’s acclaimed eateries!
Believe…In Holiday Magic Fireworks Spectacular
1313 S. Disneyland Drive, Anaheim
Disney and tourists seem to go hand-in-hand, but you’re going to want to be one of them this holiday season! Everyone’s fave mouse sure knows how to put on a show and this firework spectacular is no exception. Sit back and watch world-class pyrotechnics ignite the sky to merry holiday music. Sleeping Beauty Castle all lit up with 80,000 lights is also pretty magical, but we were sold with three little words — gingerbread-scented snow. OK, actually that’s a hyphenate, but c’mon —gingerbread-scented snow!
Holiday Events at The Music Center
135 N. Grand Ave., Downtown
OK, we admit it. As much as we would like to, we don’t frequent this center of LA arts and culture. But as one of the world’s premier performing arts destinations, The Music Center gives us some spectacular reasons to pay a visit this holiday season! While we do love rocking out to Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You in the car, nothing compares to hearing and possibly singing along to all the yuletide classics and our fave pop tunes live in Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Holiday Festivities at the Farmers Market
Thurs. Dec 20-Mon. Dec. 24
6333 W. 3rd St.
The original Farmers Market truly is one of a kind and so are the seasonal celebrations that will take over the market at the end of the month. There will be holiday arts and crafts, traditional caroling, live bands, and delightful Nutcracker marionette shows. Doesn’t a marionette show sound merry?! Stock up on everything you need for your holiday feast and be a little touristy all at once!
