The Sleeping Secret Happy Couples Know
What’s your sleeping style? Flat on your back? Wrapped around a giant body pillow? Intertwined with your guy? Sprawled out like the Vitruvian man? It turns out, the way you sleep with your partner could be a sign of how strong your relationship is.
A study conducted as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival found that happy couples tend to stay pretty close between the sheets.
From a survey of more than 1,000 people, researchers found that 86% of couples who slept less than an inch away from each other claimed to be happy with their relationship, while just 66% of those who slept more than 30 inches apart claimed the same thing. Could that mean spooning is the key to love? Maybe.
“This is the first survey to examine couples’ sleeping positions, and the results allow people to gain an insight into someone’s personality and relationship by simply asking them about their favourite sleeping position,” said Professor Richard Wiseman, a psychologist of the University of Hertfordshire.
“One of the most important differences involved touching. Ninety four percent of couples who spent the night in contact with one another were happy with their relationship, compared to just 68% of those that didn’t touch.”
But what if your partner is a snorer, a thrasher, or one of those people who gives off an insane amount of body heat? Will sleeping peacefully on the other side of the bed really ruin your relationship? Probably not.
“The key issue is if you have a couple who used to sleep close together but are now drifting further apart in bed, then that could symptomatic of them growing apart when they are awake,” Professor Wiseman said. “Change in a couple’s sleeping habits is the important factor.”
